When I first started my business, I quickly became aware of who my dream clients were, and who were what I called my disaster clients.
Dream clients are easy to work with. They are on the same wavelength and most importantly share similar values to you. They are the ones who understand the value of your services.
Disaster clients on the other hand are the ones where everything goes wrong and nothing is ever quite good enough. This often lead to scope creep (ie they were getting more from me than what was originally agreed) and they always wanted to haggle on price.
Needless to say, business is so much more easy and joyous when it’s full of your dream clients.
So, how on earth do we find and attract them? And more importantly, repel the disaster clients? Here’s my three tips on how to attract your dream clients with your content.
Understand who they are
Your dream client is more than ‘married with three children’. They are thinking, feeling, breathing humans who experience a range of emotions and challenges every day. They are a complex web of their past experiences as well as their dreams and aspirations.
Getting to the bottom of this and being able to relate to them on a human basis – empathising and dreaming with them is one of the keys to attracting them to your business.
(If you’re having trouble tapping into the human side of your ideal client, try my Un-boring Ideal Client Avatar Workbook).
It may be as simple as working out where they are right now and where they want to be, then you can show them how you can bridge that gap within your zone of genius.
Know your client journey
The next step is all about knowing your client journey. This is a 5 stage pathway that you guide your ideal client along by serving them content that helps them move onto the next stage. This takes them from not knowing anything about you to becoming a raving fan.
When we think about our content creation in terms of this client journey, we become far more purposeful and strategic. We move from late night, last minute social media posting to organised, meaningful, pre-planned content.

Be genuinely you
This is the biggest piece of the attraction puzzle, and one that takes the longest to realise and sink in.
People buy from people. And when your content reflects the true, unapologetic you, then you’ll attract those people who want more of you and love you.
It took me a long time to drop the corporate, professional speak (even in my blogs), to realise that’s not what my dream client wanted from me, nor is it who I really wanted to be. It’s what I thought was expected of me.
Don’t be afraid to post your polarising or unpopular opinion on something in your industry. Or how something drives you batty and how you’re different. Use your content to articulate this as often as you can!
By being you, you’re not only attracting your dream clients, you’re making it very clear who shouldn’t be working with you.
Dream clients make business so much easier. By following these three tips, you’ll be attracting your dream clients with your content in no time. Imagine filling every day not only with the thing that you love to do the most, but with people who bring you joy as well.
